For some, experiencing pleasure can bring feelings of guilt or shame, or of feeling selfish and not being deserving of it. However, people’s upbringings or distressing or traumatic life events can take their toll on their relationship to pleasure. Furthermore, our eros can be viewed as not just our libido, but our life force, creativity and the very essence of who we are. Why The Yellow Submarine is a trippy cult classic The female cartoonists who draw for change His virtuosic illustrations and poetic texts have drawn comparisons to Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear and Samuel Beckett, winning him critical acclaim and a devoted cult following in his native US. Drawing on sources as varied as the novels of Agatha Christie and French silent film, he created a uniquely macabre vision of the world filled with crumbling English mansions, jittery dark-eyed flappers and stony faced Edwardian gents where nothing is quite as it seems. From the Gashlycrumb Tinies to The Doubtful Guest, Edward Gorey’s morbidly funny little books are gothic surrealist masterpieces. In my opinion, this difference is one of the main reasons you or I as a manga reader should be reading them. It comes from a completely different country, so of course the stories, art, scenarios, and iconography will be different. I used to pick it up because I didn’t notice the difference between it and manga, plus it was published and promoted as manga… so as a new reader, the difference wasn’t clear.īut now as a seasoned reader, I will say that because manhwa can look so much like manga that it actually shows its differences more clearly. I think I only read 2 or 3 titles last year. I actually have a pretty size-able collection of manhwa in my collection, but it’s something I pick up rarely to read. There’s more to that definition, but I’ll talk about that at some later point. Manhwa in its simplest definition are comics coming out of South Korea. So, not manga at all… this really should have been called #ManhwaMonday. Today’s #MangaMonday recommendations are for manhwa. Funny, how despite being the person who sets up these themes, they seem to spring up on me! Ack! |
